Malnourished Stroke Undergo Worse Clinical Outcomes

It has come to the knolwledge from an article published in the recent days in Archives of Neurology (JAMA/Archives), January issue that any patient who is affected with an acute ischemic stroke, is in any hospital and remains without the proper and effective provision of nutrition, will remain undernourished during his/her hospital stay and undergo worse clinical outcomes. This will be more evdient if the hapless person gets compared to any other patient, also suffering from acute ischemic stroke, but not undernourished. The team of the researchers concerned with the study included Sung-Hee Yoo, R.N., M.S., University of Ulsan College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea who were found to observe 131 acute ischemic stroke patients having their nutritional status assessed within 24 hours of being hospitalized, and then again seven days later. The entire team assessed the complications of the very patients straight off following admission to hospital, and did so continuously until they were discharged from hospital or moved to a rehabilitation unit. Three months later their clinical outcomes were measured.

In this respect the concerned researchers associated with the study explained the entire happening, "Although undernutrition [a deficiency in overall calories or one or more nutrients] is common in medical, geriatric and stroke patients, its treatment has received little attention. Because undernutrition may influence clinical outcomes, it is important to assess nutritional status and treat undernutrition particularly during acute stage of stroke." They also stated, "These results suggest that patients undernourished at admission do not recover well with general hospital diets and are more likely to have post-stroke complications and that undernourished patients during hospitalization are more likely to develop poor functional outcomes." To them, the presence of the strategic nutritional support, particularly in patients with baseline undernutrition, may improve clinical outcomes after acute ischemic stroke.
